Hatch Whitfield Deed to Newman Potts, 1847


This is the first known record of Newman in Wayne County.

This indenture made the Eight day of June in the year of our Lord one Thousand eight hundred and forty seven between Hatch Whitfield of the state of Mississippi and Monroe county of the one part and Numon Pots of the state of North Carolina of Wayne of the other part.

Witnesseth that I the said Hatch Whitfield for and in consideration of the sum of five hundred and forty two dollars to him the said Hatch Whitfield in hand paid at and before the unsealing and delivery of these presents by the said Numon Pots the receipt and payment whereof is hereby acknowledged he the said Hatch Whitfield hath granted bargained and sold and by these presents doth grant bargain and sell unto the said Numon Pots a certain tract or parcel of land situated lying and being in the county aforesaid on Sleepy creek beginning at a blackgum in the head of the main branch and runs then north one and a half east 281 poles to a stake then west 177 poles to a stake then south 200 poles to a stake then south 66 east 191 poles to the beginning containing two hundred and seventy six acres more or less together with all and singular the hereditaments privileges and appurtenances whatsoever there unto belonging or in any wise appertaining. To have and to hold the primis above mentioned and every part and parcel there of with the appurtenances unto the said Numan Pots his heirs and assigns forever to the only proper use benefits of the said Numon Pots his heirs and assigns forever and this said Hatch Whitfield for him self and his heirs doth covenant and agree to and with the said Numon Pots the said tract or parcel of land and premises and every part and parcel thereof against him and his heirs and against the lawful claim or claims of all and every other person and persons whatsoever to the said Numon Pots his heirs and assigns shall and will warrant and forever defend by these presents.
